Quote Response

Roland Barthes’ quote encompasses a lot of my own thoughts about photography. Pictures have the power to capture moments and memories, which then can be relived by others. One of photography’s main goals is to document. Although, by looking at a photograph, we cannot be in that exact moment, we can have a clear reference to some information about the moment captured. Once someone is gone, we still have photographs to remind ourselves of those people. In this quote, Barthes is able to look at photos of his mother who had died and “[move] back in time with her.” I find this aspect of photography magical.
